Librarian (Distinction Badge)

Distinction Badge Can-do

Librarian

On Thursday I had Librarian on a hot sunny day at Oakland's school.

When I ran to the library it was extremely hot, but I finally got to the library. When I walked in I went to the trolley of books there was a big stack of them to put on the shelf.  Sharna was also at the library and a new girl too and they were doing their jobs. It was pretty hot in the library, I am so happy that I did not take my jacket to the library, because last week I had left it in the library. It was there all night and I didn't even know it was in there. I was certain that it was in the classroom. I had to wait till the morning when luckily Jack P remembered it was in the library and found it for me. I was extremely happy that I got it back.

When I had put all of the books away I had asked Mrs Ward if she wanted me to help with any thing, but when I went to the trolley there was no more books. So I went to help the new girl, but when I went to her she had been putting the wrong books on the wrong shelf. We have yellow tags and white tags, and she was puting the yellow tags on the white tag shelf. So I showed her how we put them away properly and then helped her sort them out together.

Kapa Haka (Distinction Badge)

Distinction Badge Can-do

Kapa Haka

Today after Te Reo I had Kapa Haka in the morning till 11:30. We are practicing hard for the gala and we are putting a lot of effort into it. We are also going to be singing at the opening of the new Halswell Community building. I can't wait for it to open, because I really miss going to the library and it will also be fun to go back to the pool in the summer time.

I think at the gala we will be singing on the outside stage or on the big trailer. Maybe the boys will be on the trailer and the girls will be in front. I have performed in the kapa haka group at least two times, but this will be my brothers first time. He will be performing the haka, which is going to be pretty interesting watching the new ones perform. I actually won't be able to turn round and watch him, so I hope my mum or dad video him doing the haka. Hopefully they will video me too so that I can watch it later.

My brother has already performed the haka to the senior citizens and it was his first time to wear the black shorts and the red top. He was really proud to wear it and I was very proud of him too.

We might only have one more practice before the gala performance, but maybe two if we practice on Wednesday to get really perfect.

Choir (Distinction Badge)

Choir

Today I had choir on a hot sunny day. When I had signed in I went to the music room to practice for the Gala and the community day. When I walked in the choir group had been singing Hallelujah, so I started singing with the choir group.

After that we sang Adiemus, it is a really good song to sing and we might sing it at the Gala. After we had sang Adiemus Mr M gave us a book of Christmas carols, that I think we could be singing to the old people at the rest home. When we had got through one song we kept going. There was a lot of Christmas songs, like Snoopy's Christmas, Jingle Bells Rock, Santa's Coming to Town and a few more which I can't remember. When we go to the rest home, we will probably take our song books with us, because I don't think we can learn all the new songs in time. I think we are having a whole day of travelling round different rest homes to sing to lots of old people. I'm really looking forward to it. We will probably go to the one in Aidanfield, but I'm not sure where else we will go to.

S.L.C

On Monday we had our S.L.C. (Student Led Conference) Oakland's school finished at 2:00 because my brothers S.L.C was at 2:30 and my S.L.C was at 3:00 so he had 30 mins, but they did 15 mins.
I think that I did pretty well on Monday I think that I will get a good score for year 7.

Here is my S.L.C slide show.

Computer Duty (Distinction Badge

Computer Duty

It's a really important job being a computer monitor, because there are about 90 plus students needing the laptops for the day. We are not a school that makes students buy and bring their own in. This is great, because it means we don't have to carry them in our bags and have the responsibility of looking after them ourselves.

I like being a computer monitor, because it makes me better at taking care of a laptop. Hopefully in the future I will have my own laptop that I will be able to take to school. One day I think we won't have books, just a laptop in our bags.

When all the laptops are out, and everyone is ready to start work, there is always a mad rush for the laptops. It would be great if we got all forty laptops to work on, but I think the boys wouldn't like that.

Librarian (Distinction Badge)

Librarian

Today at the library Kyla and I helped Mrs Ward with doing something for her in the library at morning tea.

What Kyla and I helped with was that we scanned a lot of book in the cloakroom, but we did get through two shelf's.
Kyla was scanning the books and I gave the books to Kyla and I also put away the books on the shelf's in the cloakroom.

We had scanned a lot of books. When we were scanning the books we had to look if it's bar-cod was coming up on the computer, but if it didn't we would have to go through every book to find which book that did not get scanned by Kyla ,it would take so long.

One time Kyla scanned a book three times so we had to get rid of two of the bar-cods so we had to be shore that we delete the right one or would go through the books all over again so it would take so long to do it, it would take us all through the bell :-o. When the bell rang Kyla and I had to tell Mrs Ward that we had to go to class and we would have to come back tomorrow to finish it off.

Kapa Haka (Distinction Badge)

Kapa Haka

Today in the afternoon, I performed to the Senior Citizens for Kapa Haka and Choir. When we started our performance we had to get changed in our small bathroom, when we were in the bathroom we had put on the top and the Kapa Haka skirt it was not nice to wear.

When the first performance started we had sang the Oakland's school song and I think that the older people liked it very much, after that song had finish we sang Pai ma it was a really good song, we had also had performed with our poi's the year 8's had to do long poi, then after that one we had sang our finally song with the Haka,  Whakataka Te Hau. When we had finished the Kapa Haka and ever thing else we came around the old people to ask if they wand a cup of tea or coffee I had asks an old man if he wanted coffee or tea, he wanted coffee with milk no sugar and when we were going around we also had to give them something to eat there was a lot of then's that they could have.

When everything had finish the bell had rang for home time, but I had stayed to help put away the chairs and to clean up, but I did not have time to clean up, because I had to go home. I really enjoyed it, It was really fun to watch the performance and see lot's of cool things.

Senior Citizens Performance

Choir (Distinction Badge)

Choir

Yesterday at school I had choir in the music room at lunchtime, to practice Money Money Money and Hallelujah. This was an extra practice so that we were ready to sing in front of the
Senior Citizens.

It did not take long to practice, so we still had a lunchtime. After we had sang Money Money Money we sang Hallelujah, I love singing Hallelujah. When we had finished singing both of them Miss Harris said we should sing Adiemus and that we should also sing that to the Senior Citizens.

Today in the afternoon, I performed to the Senior Citizens for Kapa Haka and Choir. We did Kapa Haka first and had to get changed really fast back into our school uniforms to be ready to sing. We didn't get to wear our choir shirts this time. When It was our time to go and perform in front of the Senior Citizen's we had to get in a good line, but it was not very good, when we finally walked in through our hall doors we were in the lines that Miss Harris did for us.

The song that we had sung first was  Money Money Money, Mr M was playing the piano so that we now what the tune was and Miss Harris was helping us go high or lower for Money Money Money. Our next song was Hallelujah it was my favourite song to sing and I think the older people liked it to. When we were singing Hallelujah Hannah, Monique, Sarah and Jackie played on there Guitars and Mr M played the Piano for Hallelujah.

When all of the performance had finished we had to around to ask the older people if they wanted  a cup of tea or coffee. When we were also going around we had plates of food there was all different food to eat, when we had finished Miss O ask if any one wanted something to eat since they have been singing or helping. It was a very good day to finish a Friday off.

Computer Duty (Distinction Badge)

Distinction Badge Can-do

Computer Duty

On Monday I had Computer Duty. Most of the time the girl computer monitors look after them, because they are in our room. There are four girl monitors and four boy monitors. We aren't given a different day to do it on, it's just who gets there first and because i really want to earn my Distinction badge, I really try hard to do it as many times as I can.

Sometimes the boys forget to come through and pick up there laptops in the morning, because they are usually playing soccer. So we sometimes help to take them through to their room. We are helping them a lot by doing this, because it means they can get on with their work straight away.

At the end of the day, the boys do remember to bring their laptops through and we are there to help them put them away.

Technology (Distinction Badge)

Distinction Badge Must-do

Technology

On Tuesday I was in design.  In design we made a box that was our house / bedroom. We first had to trace out our template, which Mrs Scott showed us five examples of.

Then after we had cut out our templates we used a craft knife to cut out our doors and windows which was hard, but I had finally got the hang of it.

When I had cut out my windows and doors, Mrs Scott wanted us to come and have a look at what we had to do next. Mrs Scott showed us how to make wallpaper out of paper. She said that we could do any colour and then after that we went back to our desk so that we could get on with our designs.

I got out all my materials, like pens, pencils, scissors and stuff. I then went to get some coloured paper. The colours that I got were pink and blue. I didn't have much time left to make my wallpaper, because i was still focusing on my windows and doors. I'm looking forward to designing my wallpaper next week.

Computer Duty (Distinction Badge)

Computer Duty

Today in the morning I did computer duty. When I walked into room 24 I put my face up on the board, which is our way of doing the roll. When I'd done that, I went to ask Grace Channings if she could help me put the laptops on the side ready for school. She said yes to helping me, so i took the laptops out and she put them on the table.

In the afternoon I helped Reia put the laptops away. So when Reia was putting the laptops in the charging box, I was putting them in the right order, but I can only stack them three high.

When we put the laptops away, we have to put the laptops in the right charging unit or we would get them in the wrong slot. We have to put the right charging cords in the laptop the right way, or we could get the cords mixed's up with the boys laptops cords.

Athletics Day (Distinction Badge)

Distinction Badge Must-do

Athletics Day

I really look forward to athletics week. I was getting really upset, because it kept raining, but finally the sun came out on Friday.

My two first activities was long jump and discus. I really like doing long jump, because last year I got second and I was able to go and do it at the zones. This year I got second again, which I'm really proud of, and hopefully I'll be able to go to Hillmorton again for long jump. My best jump was 3.77m. I can't remember what I jumped last year, but hopefully I'll jump even further. Mya jumped even further and did 3.93m and Sam Laing came third with 3.56m.

I didn't do so well in discus. I came third last year, but maybe my arms aren't as strong as they were last year, but discus isn't really one of my strong events. I can't wait till Monday when I can do high jump and my favorite one which is Long Distance!

Computer Duty (Distinction Badge)

Distinction Badge Can-do

Computer Duty

Every day of the week I do computer duty. This means I have to be at school early, because I am one of a team of four who set up the Chrome Books. I have been doing this duty since we got the 40 Chrome Book Acers. We got them at the beginning of term three.

In the group is Samara, Isabella, Reia and me. This week I got to put them out on Thursday. The Chrome Books are all kept inside a big cupboard on wheels that charges the Chrome Books. I usually put the Chrome Books away at the end of the day, because they all have to go back on charge over night. This sometimes makes me a bit late out of class.

Kapa Haka (Distinction Badge)

Distinction Badge Can-do

Kapa Haka

I wasn't actually able to go to Kapa Haka today, because I was at the Horncastle Arena doing my choir practice. I wish I could have done both, but I can't be in two places at one time!

My brother Jack went to Kapa Haka and he told me that he was finally able to do the Haka and he is only eight years old. He's always wanted to do the Haka. I can't wait to see him doing it next time at the practice session. He told me they also did poi practice and they sang Pai Ma.
It was the Light Festival on Saturday, but I was really unsure whether we were suppose to be performing or not, because Mr Brown kept saying he'd send a email out to our parents, but we didn't get one. So I didn't actually go, because I didn't have any information about what time I had to be there. It was a shame, because I would have liked to have performed.

Choir (Distinction Badge)

Distinction Badge Can-do

Choir

On Friday it was choir as usual, but this was not a normal practice session, because in there were parents in the music room ready to go with us to the Horncastle Arena. It was finally our day to go and have a practices in the arena, which was very exciting.

When Miss Harris had done the roll, she asked if anyone wanted to go to the toilet as it was best to go now whilst we were still at school, because we couldn't wander off when we got to the arena. When I had come out of the toilets, the whole choir group was out side, so I didn't have to walk back to the music room.
I sat on the bus with Sharna and when we got there the practice session went well. All of the other schools were there too. There was around 1,400 of us singing, so that was a lot of kids to organise.
Dad took to me to the arena in the evening and we found Mrs Harris and I went straight through with all the Oakland's choir, all wearing our nice white shirts and ties. I found my place to sit and then we sang our first song that all 1,400 kids, plus the audience sang together. It was God of Nations. We always sang all the songs together, except for the special choir who sang parts of a song on their own.
It was a really fun experience, but I was really tired when I got home at about 9.45pm.

This is a cool photo

Librarian (Distinction Badge)

Librarian

On a rainy Thursday I did my librarian duties. When I had come back from choir I went to the library to do my job. Waiting on the trolley were some book's for me to put away. So I took most of them and went around the library, putting all the books back on the correct bookshelves. Sharna was already at the library when I got there, because she managed to get her choir shirt quicker than I did. She had already put some of the books back on the shelves.
When I had put all of my books away, I said to Sharna, where was Monique? So Sharna decided to go and look for her. When Sharna came back with Monique, Sharna showed Monique that we had left her some books for her to put on the shelf.
When the bell rang, my group went around to tell the children in the library that it was closed. When they had all left, we were all able to go back to class.
